About 6 months ago, we noticed Abigail had a hard time hearing. Abigail's teacher at school and other parents confirmed that they noticed it as well. So we took her to see her pediatrician. They did a hearing test and Abigail failed in both ears. They saw fluid behind one ear but they didn't know if there was anything else going on so they recommended we see an Otolaryngologist (fancy name for an ENT😉)
He confirmed that Abigail had fluid behind her ears. Originally it was just one ear and then she had fluid in both ears, which made it next to impossible for her to hear. Long story short, but they said if the fluid didn't drain in a few months we would need to put tubes in. We went in for our 4th appointment and low and behold the fluid was gone. They did a hearing test just to make sure everything was ok and they discovered that the hearing loss was not because of the fluid after all. Abigail has sensorineural hearing loss. They said she needed hearing aids in both ears.
Abigail was pretty upset at first and then they told her that she got to pick out the colors of her hearing aids (all pink of course!) and that perked her up real quick! Abigail got her hearing aids a few weeks ago. I wish I would have videoed Abigail's reaction when they first put them on. It was precious❤
There were lots of tears immediately following but by the end of the night, Abigail was loving them! Abigail said she doesn't even know she has them on any more😍 We've immediately noticed a huge difference with them. It's been even more noticeable at school.
This whole process has been a little shocking. Colin and I thought it was just fluid like everyone else. And then just to complicate things a little bit more Abigail's cardiologist told us that there are heart arrhythmia conditions associated with hearing loss and because Abigail already has a heart defect it is possible that she has one of these conditions. They asked us to undergo genetic testing to see if she tests positive for any of these conditions. It's not quite as black and white as we were hoping, but we'll just wait and see what it shows. We met with the geneticist about a week ago and the test results take about 4-6 weeks.
We are so proud of Abigail and how well she has handled everything!! She is such a trooper! Abigail even did a show and tell with her class about her hearing aids. So cute!! Abigail even said that a few of her classmates want hearing aids now! They are pretty cool!!
